Best Team Experience Interview Protocol

The protocol is introduced….

Before we start I would like to explain a little bit about what we are going to do because it may be a little different from what you are used to. This is going to be an 'appreciative interview'. We are going to interview each other and ask questions about times when things worked at their BEST in your work. Many times, we ask questions about things that aren't working well - the problems - so we can fix them. In this case, we are going to try to find out about the things at their best - the successes - so that we can find out what works and find ways to infuse more of it into our project moving forward. This positive change approach has been widely researched and proven effective in a variety of situations (i.e., transformation efforts, education, parenting, athletics, health care, etc.), including team and organization effectiveness. The end result of the interview will help us understand those 'life-giving forces', which will increase our vitality, effectiveness, and success going into the future together.

  1. Think of a time when you were on a hugely successful team, a time that you felt energized, fulfilled and most effective-when you were able to accomplish even more than you imagined. What made it such a great team? Tell the story about the situation, the people involved, and how the team achieved its breakthrough.
  2. Without being humble, what was it about you that contributed to the success of the team? Describe in detail these qualities and what you value about yourself that enabled success. Additionally, what was it about the environment, setting, the way in which you worked that added to this success?
  3. It is one year from today and your team is functioning as you always envisioned it would - the team is more successful than any of us could have ever imagined. What are we doing, how are we working together differently, what does this success look like and how do we make it happen?
